PMAAI has been teaching no-gi MMA classes for over twenty years. The curriculum draws from a variety of grappling arts; following the JKD concept of absorbing what is useful. They teach Shooto wrestling (the Japanese style of no-gi MMA that was staging world competitions 20 years before the UFC), as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Combat Submission Wrestling, Dan Inosanto and Larry Hartsel Grappling, Silat, and Muay Thai. With a wide range of techniques and ranges to master, the long-qualified instructors create an all-rounded fighter skilled in proven common, and sometimes uncommon, techniques.

From the Progressive Martial Arts Academy International website:

Grappling is a very broad term used by Progressive Martial Arts Academy to categorise the closer range arts that are taught here. The grappling arts are primarily drawn from three sources, these being the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of the Machado Brothers, the Jun Fan Grappling of Larry Hartsell, and the grappling blend of Guro Dan Inosanto (including Filipino Dumog). Complementing these arts further are the techniques and skills direct from Shoot Wrestling and Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling.

Larry Hartsell’s Jun Fan Grappling and Guro Dan Inosanto’s grappling are themselves blended arts incorporating various styles of Western Wrestling, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Shooto, and Dumog. The use of grappling techniques is determined by the combat situation already being at close range or by the desire of the practitioner to fight at close range. Within the term ‘close range’ there are a number of different positions or situations implied, and the combination of situation and desired outcome will then determine which techniques are employed.

The instructors at Progressive Martial Arts Academy International work closely with, and also regularly train with both here and overseas, Master Jean Jacques Machado, Guro Dan Inosanto, and Shooto champion Erik Paulson. As conflicts often move to the ground, whether through choice or by losing balance, the ability to maintain a degree of control and effectiveness in close-range and ground-based fighting is paramount. Drawing from different wrestling arts and blended arts provides a wealth of techniques to apply while also resulting in the refinement of the core skills and subtleties that hold true through all forms of grappling.

About the area/region

City of Brisbane

Tingalpa

Tingalpa is a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) east of the CBD, and borders Belmont, Cannon Hill, Hemmant, and Manly West.

The suburb has some older style homes built in the post war period – weatherboard and chamferboard post war cottages in particular. Most of the new estates are made up of typically low set and high set brick and tile homes. Previously the land that is now being developed into residential zones was devoted to small farmlets and semi-industrial developments.

The recent developments, which occurred in the last five years, are increasing the population and the median house prices of the suburb.

Also nearby is the Murarrie railway station that runs west to the City and east to Manly and the bay. There are also several bus routes from Tingalpa to neighbouring suburbs.
